POVIDONE-IODINE TEAT DIP SOLUTION 5%
DESCRIPTION
Povidone-Iodine Teat Dip Solution 5% is a reddish-brown liquid containing 5% Povidone-Iodine complex (equivalent to 0.5% available iodine or 5,000 ppm). It acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic and disinfectant.
Formulation: Typically contains emollients (skin conditioners) and wetting agents to ensure effective coverage and skin protection.

INDICATIONS
This product is indicated for use in dairy herd management to:
Prevent Mastitis: Significantly reduces the population of bacteria on teat skin, thereby preventing intramammary infections (mastitis).
Sanitize Teats: Effective against major mastitis pathogens including:
Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcus agalactiae
Streptococcus dysgalactiae
Streptococcus uberis
Escherichia coli
Clean and Condition: The formulation helps clean organic matter from the teat skin while maintaining skin health to prevent chapping.
PHARMACOLOGY
Mechanism of Action: The Povidone-Iodine complex serves as a reservoir for free iodine. Upon contact with the skin, it slowly releases iodine, which penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms. It oxidizes proteins and enzymes, resulting in rapid cell death.
Spectrum: It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.
Emollient Action: The added skin conditioners help maintain the moisture balance of the teat skin, preventing hyperkeratosis and cracks where bacteria could hide.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Route of Administration: Topical (Teat Dip) only. Do not inject or administer orally.
Usage Mode: This 5% concentration (0.5% available iodine) is typically a Ready-to-Use formulation for post-milking dipping.
Application Method:
Post-Milking Dip: Immediately after milking, dip each teat into the solution using a dip cup, ensuring full coverage of the teat surface. Do not wipe off.
Pre-Milking Dip (Optional): Can be used before milking. Apply to teats, allow to stand for 30 seconds, and thoroughly dry with a single-use paper towel before attaching milking units.
Dilution: Generally used undiluted. If used as a pre-dip in some protocols, it may be diluted 1:1 with water, but check specific manufacturer instructions.
WITHDRAWAL PERIODS
Milk: Zero (0) days. When used as directed for teat dipping, there is no withdrawal period for milk.
Meat: Zero (0) days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND WARNINGS
Hypersensitivity: Do not use on animals with a known hypersensitivity to iodine or Povidone-Iodine.
Incompatibility: Do not mix with other disinfectants, especially those containing mercury, silver, or alkaline substances, as this may reduce efficacy.
Freezing: Do not use if the solution has been frozen and separated.
Human Warning: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands after use.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Local: Occasional mild, transient stinging may occur if the teat skin is damaged or cracked.
Skin Health: Proper use with emollients minimizes skin drying; however, overuse in extreme weather conditions without proper drying may lead to skin irritation.
STORAGE
Store in a cool, dark place (below 25°C).
Protect from direct sunlight and heat.
Keep container tightly closed when not in use.
Shelf life: Typically 24 months.
