Pharmacological Properties
Pharmacodynamics
Vitamins A and D are classified as agents that regulate tissue metabolism.
Vitamin A plays a crucial role in promoting growth and maintaining the normal function of epithelial tissues, such as the skin, conjunctiva, and cornea. It is also involved in the synthesis of rhodopsin, thereby enhancing the light sensitivity of the retina. Furthermore, Vitamin A participates in numerous oxidative processes within the body, particularly the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. A deficiency can lead to growth arrest, poor bone development, reduced reproductive capacity, rough and dry skin, corneal softening, xerophthalmia, and night blindness.
Vitamin D has a significant impact on calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone growth in young animals. Its primary physiological function is to promote the normal absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the small intestine. The metabolically active forms of Vitamin D regulate calcium reabsorption in the renal tubules, maintain calcium levels in circulating blood, and promote normal bone development.
Drug Interactions
Aluminum hydroxide can reduce bile acids in the upper small intestine, affecting the absorption of Vitamin A. Mineral oil and neomycin can also interfere with Vitamin A absorption.
Vitamin E can promote the absorption of Vitamin A; however, the administration of large doses of Vitamin E can deplete the body's stored Vitamin A.
High doses of Vitamin A can antagonize the anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids.
Long-term, high-dose use of liquid paraffin and neomycin can reduce the absorption of Vitamin D.
Enzyme inducers such as phenobarbital can accelerate the metabolism of Vitamin D.
