Indications
A combination of antibiotics drugs.
Ttreatment of otitis externa or otitis media caused by bacteria susceptible to florfenicol or metronidazole.
Dosage and Administration
For Auricular use.
The recommended dose level of the product is 3~4 drops two times per day, for 5~7 days.
Insert the applicator nozzle into the affected external ear canal and squeeze the entire contents into the ear.
Gently massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds to allow distribution of the solution. Restrain the dog’s head to prevent shaking, for 2 minutes.
Precautions
- Before the veterinary medicinal product is applied, the external auditory canal must be examined thoroughly to ensure that the ear drum is not perforated.
- Re-evaluate the dog if hearing loss or signs of vestibular dysfunction are observed during treatment.
- After the administration, wet ears or clear discharge can be observed which is not related to the disease pathology.
- Whenever possible, the use of the veterinary medicinal product should be based on identification of infecting organisms and susceptibility testing.
Adverse reactions
Mild irritation to damaged skin have been observed following the application.
Pharmacodynamic properties
Florfenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic which acts by inhibiting protein synthesis, through binding to and acting on the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. Its spectrum of activity includes Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. In vitro activity of florfenicol against Pseudomonas spp. is low.
Metronidazole has antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity. After metronidazole has penetrated the bacteria the molecule is reduced by the susceptible bacteria (anaerobe). The metabolites that are created have a toxic effect on the bacteria through binding to the bacterial DNA. In general metronidazole is bactericidal for susceptible bacteria in concentrations equal to or slightly higher than the minimum inhibiting concentration (MIC).
